FAQs
Is a LickiMat a chew toy?
Your LickiMat® is not a chew toy. Supervise and train your pet. Inspect for wear and tear and take away and replace if any piece becomes loose or detached. The product may not be suitable if your pet is a chewer. You should always consider a LickiMat Keeper™ for puppies and chewers, and always supervise them when using a LickiMat. For best results, seek advice from a professional animal trainer.
Can my LickiMat® be used to promote slower eating?
Your LickiMat can be used to promote slower eating, which in turn reduces bloating and improves digestion. It's a great alternative to slow-feed bowls for small and medium dogs. It is important to select the right LickiMat to match the food type for your pet - there are different models for raw food, wet pet food, dry kibble, soaked kibble, pates, gels and liquid foods. You can even freeze or partially freeze food and treats on the mat for slower and more enjoyable feeding.
Can I freeze a LickiMat?
Absolutely. You can freeze and stack multiple LickiMats to make it easier to pull one out when you need it.
If you store a LickiMat in the refrigerator, cover it with cling wrap to keep in the freshness.
Can I microwave a LickiMat?
Absolutely. You can microwave food and treats the way you would in any other dish. Remember to cover the LickiMat with cling wrap to stop sputtering. If you microwave minced meat, be careful not to spill any of the juices!
Can I cover the entire LickiMat?
Absolutely. The LickiMat is designed to be covered with spreadable treats all the way to the edge.
Please do not cover the entire LickiMat when you are first introducing the LickiMat to your dog or cat, and follow the instructions on the label or the training notes for each product on this website. You should start with small amounts of food and treat in the middle of the LickiMat.
You should generally not stack the treat too much higher than the mat for cats and small dogs. You can stack the treat higher the larger the size of the cat because of the correspondingly larger tongue, but generally no higher than twice the height of the mat.
How do I clean the LickiMat?
Most LickiMats are dishwasher safe. Check the product page for your LickiMat to be sure.
The Classic LickiMats should be washed under the sink after every use. Scrubbing with a brush is not normally necessary. Shake off excess water and turn them over to let them dry naturally.
It is essential to dry the LickiMat after washing to remove any moisture.
Will my dog chew the LickiMat?
Please take note of the detailed training instructions to avoid your dog chewing the LickiMat. LickiMats are made from non-toxic rubber and are chewable.
Your dog does not know what a LickiMat is, even if she/he has previously used a LickiMat, so it is imperative to supervise and re-train your dog with each new LickiMat until you are sure they are trained.
The LickiMat Keeper was designed to protect the LickiMat from chewing by puppies, chewers and even dogs that are not normally chewers, especially if you allow food to dry out on the LickiMat.
Training your dog to lick the LickiMat should bring her/him (and you) many years of health benefits. Please remember that dogs love being trained (at any age)!
